Jackie Speier is heading back to Washington, but this time it will be as Congresswoman Speier and not as a congressional aide. Speier, a Democrat from Burlingame, was an aide to former Rep. Leo Ryan who was killed in Jonestown, Guyana in 1978. She is a Jonestown survivor who was shot five times and left for dead during the massacre.

Speier will be representing California’s 12th Congressional district which includes parts of San Francisco and San Mateo counties. She won the five-way contest with nearly 78% of the 74,986 ballots cast in the special election to fill the seat vacated by the death of Tom Lantos in February. He closest competitor was Greg Conlon who received just over nine percent of the vote.
Speier was a member of the California State Senate as well as the Assembly and left both positions because of California’s term limits laws.
